Landscape visibility computation: necessary, but not sufficient

چکیده

In this essay we review the major developments in the history and techniques of landscape visibility analysis, providing a number of examples and identifying a few critical challenges to the community of those who would seek to evaluate visibilityöand related characteristics such as visual quality or preferenceöin landscapes. We argue that visibility per se is a necessary prerequisite, but insufficient in itself, as a basis for the common planning, design, and public policy questions in the context of which many visibility analyses are instigated. Policy Capacity Is Necessary but Not Sufficient; Comment on “Health Reform Requires Policy Capacity”

Policy capacity focuses on the managerial and organizational abilities to inform policy decisions with sound research and analysis, and facilitate policy implementation with operational efficiency. It stems from a view of the policy process that is rational and positivistic, in which optimal policy choices can be identified, selected, and implemented with objectivity. By itself, however, policy...

Coevolutionary Dynamics of Interacting Species

One of the open questions in evolutionary computation is how an arms race may be initiated between coevolving entities such that the entities acquire new behaviors and increase in complexity over time. It would be highly desirable to establish the necessary and sufficient conditions which lead to such an arms race. We investigate what these conditions may be using a model of competitive coevolu...

Necessary but Not Sufficient…; Comment on “Knowledge Mobilization in Healthcare Organizations: A View From the Resource-Based View of the Firm”

The challenge of mobilizing knowledge to improve patient care, population health and ensure effective use of resources is an enduring one in healthcare systems across the world. This commentary reflects on an earlier paper by Ferlie and colleagues that proposes the resource-based view (RBV) of the firm as a useful theoretical lens through which to study knowledge mobilization in healthcare. Spe...

Maintaining Visibility Polygon of a Moving Point Observer in Polygons with Holes∗

Computing the visible region from a moving point in planar environments has many applications in computer graphics and computational geometry. This problem has been considered thoroughly before and several algorithms have been proposed for it. Almost all these solutions use a preprocessing step to build data structures which reflect the visibility coherence of the scene. Then, this data is used...

A Characterization of Visibility Graphs for Pseudo-polygons

In this paper, we give a characterization of the visibility graphs of pseudo-polygons. We first identify some key combinatorial properties of pseudo-polygons, and we then give a set of five necessary conditions based off our identified properties. We then prove that these necessary conditions are also sufficient via a reduction to a characterization of vertex-edge visibility graphs given by O’R...
